Historian Heather Cox Richardson warns that the MAGA movement is fracturing as primary defeats, staff exits, and low approval ratings rock the White House.
A man holds a MAGA (Make America Great Again) hat as he and other supporters of Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki demonstrate in front of the presidential palace in Warsaw against the European Union’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) program on February 21, 2026. Over a thousand right-wing supporters gathered to demand a presidential veto against the government’s bill to introduce SAFE in Poland. While Poland has heavily ramped up its defence spending since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it is also a major recipient of European aid. Currently, it is set to receive 43.7 billion euros under the European financial instrument Security Action For Europe (SAFE), intended to strengthen European defence capabilities. With these funds — disbursed in the form of loans to finance security-related projects — Warsaw plans to boost domestic production in the armaments sector. Historian Heather Cox Richardson stated on August 13, 2026, that the MAGA movement is rapidly fracturing in Washington. She laid out severe political warnings during her popular online video series. Richardson argued that President Donald Trump is growing noticeably weaker every day as internal cracks multiply.

For context, the president built his political foundation on a broad coalition during the 2024 campaign. That campaign brought together working class groups, Latino voters, and young conservatives. However, maintaining those diverse political factions in office has proven nearly impossible for White House strategists.

The author of the popular Letters from an American newsletter pointed to clear signs of internal decay. She noted that a new kind of larger democratic tent is currently coming together across the nation. At the same time, the central political base surrounding the White House appears to be fracturing completely.

Richardson highlighted recent primary election results as major warning indicators for party leadership. Two prominent Trump loyalists recently lost their primary races despite receiving personal endorsements from the president. MyPillow founder Mike Lindell suffered a crushing defeat, going down by more than 10 points. Representative Andy Ogles also lost his primary contest after securing direct presidential support.

Public approval figures reflect similar political discontent among everyday voters across the country. Trump’s overall job approval rating has recently sunk down to 33 percent in national polling. Most Americans now tell pollsters that they view the president as fundamentally dishonest. A majority of respondents also report feeling that the country is currently out of control.

Political analysts note that public trust often erodes quickly when approval ratings dip below forty percent. Declining numbers make it far harder for the White House to push key agenda items through Congress.

In addition, many voters stated that the president is simply getting too old for the demanding job.

Internal Cracks Fracturing the MAGA Movement

Staff departures inside the White House further underscore mounting administrative anxiety. The White House counsel has officially exited the administration in recent days. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt is also stepping down from her high profile briefing room role.

Richardson tied these sudden departures to growing fear among senior White House aides. She argued that staffers are becoming increasingly wary of administrative demands. Aides fear being asked to do things that might get them in trouble in the long term.

We cannot independently verify these claims, so take everything lightly. Watching top officials pack their bags amidst political pressure feels like wild stuff for any administration.

The exodus of key advisors leaves the president isolated as legislative battles draw near. Losing experienced legal counsel and press personnel creates serious operational hurdles for any chief executive.

Foreign Challenges Confront the MAGA Movement

International developments are creating additional diplomatic headaches for White House officials. Richardson stated that Trump looks completely weak on the global stage right now. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently broke with the president in public fashion. Meanwhile, diplomatic relations with Iranian leaders continue to deteriorate rapidly.

Richardson claimed that Iranian officials are currently walking the president like a puppy dog. Maritime shipping traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz has essentially collapsed. Shipping companies are avoiding the regional waterway as security risks continue mounting daily.

A recent decoy plane scheme drew particularly sharp criticism from the veteran historian. Press pool reporters and senior White House aides were placed on a secondary jet facing Iranian threats. Richardson blasted the entire decoy plane arrangement as an act of sheer cowardice.

At the root of these escalating troubles lies a broken political promise from the 2024 campaign. Trump sold his reelection effort as a permanent realignment of the American electorate. However, holding white supremacists, Latino voters, and young people together in one coalition proved impossible. Richardson argued that the administration made the fatal mistake of promising everything to everybody.

Insiders report that anxiety is growing rapidly inside the administration. Midterm election preparations are already forcing lawmakers to reevaluate their allegiance to the White House.

Now, political allies are reportedly panicking as the upcoming midterm elections draw closer. Richardson warned that loyalists are racing to grab as much as they can before power shifts. Meanwhile, questions regarding the president’s personal health continue to mount among lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
